What is the name of this show?

I'm looking for the name of a show I watched on PBS a long time ago. It has a soldier in it and he runs into a "man" who is really something else, (devil maybe) and he gives him a sack and all he has to do is say "yackity yak get into my sack" and things go into his sack. What is the name of the show? Is it by Edgar Allen Poe?
